What Should I Wear? {south florida senior and teen photographer
The #1 question I get after booking: "What should I wear?!" As your photographer, my goal is to make sure you are the focus of every single frame. While I love a trendy outfit, some colors simply photograph better than others. Here is my professional advice on how to pick a color palette for you.
1. The Power of "Soft" Neutrals
If you want a timeless, high-end look, lean into creams, tans, camel, and off-white.
Why it works: Pure "stark" white can sometimes lose detail in bright sunlight, but off-whites and creams reflect light beautifully back onto your face, giving you a natural "glow" without competing with your skin tone. This works great for the beach and almost anywhere else!
2. Earth Tones are Universally Flattering
Think olive green, rust, mustard, and slate blue.
Why it works: These colors exist in nature, so they look organic in almost any setting—whether we are in a golden field or downtown. They provide enough color to be interesting but are muted enough to keep the focus on your expressions.
3. Coordinate, Don't Match
If you are bringing a friend or sibling for a few shots, avoid wearing the exact same color. Instead, pick a color story.
Example: If you’re wearing a light blue dress, have them wear a neutral tan or a navy. It creates visual depth in the photo.
4. The "Neon" Warning ⚠️
I usually recommend staying away from neon pink, lime green, or highlighter orange.
The "Color Cast" Problem: Bright neon colors reflect their tint onto your skin. A neon pink shirt can actually make your chin and neck look pink in the final images! If you want a "pop," go for a rich jewel tone (like emerald or ruby) instead.
5. Movement Creates Magic
Static photos can feel stiff. I love capturing you in motion!
The Tip: Consider wearing something that moves—a flowy skirt, a dress with lightweight fabric, or an unbuttoned jacket. When the wind catches your clothes or you spin around, it adds a sense of "life" and energy to the session.
6. Consider the Location
Nature/Park: Avoid wearing too much bright green, or you might "blend in" with the trees. Go for warm tones (reds, oranges, creams) to stand out.
Urban/City: This is where bold colors like black, royal blue, or leather textures look incredible against the gray of the pavement and brick.
7. The "Confidence" Rule
At the end of the day, the best color you can wear is the one that makes you feel like a 10/10. If you feel confident, it shows in your eyes and your posture. If you hate how you look in yellow, don't wear it just because it's "in style"!
